Of interest to: 20 |
Script details: |
“Traffic Light” food labelling could soon be rolled out across the EU if MEP's vote in favur of the changes at the European Parliament in Strasbourg today (Thursday June 17th).
If it goes ahead certain food prepared and sold here may have to abide by the new style of informing the customers as to the nutritional value of the product.
It will mean that foods that have a higher than recommended level of fat will have a red colour on the “Fat” information, alerting customers to the danger.
Hence is a product has below the recommended level of sugar this will be coloured Green.
This way of informing customers is already in place in many countries and a voluntary scheme is also in place in many chain stores in the UK.
Labour MEP Nessa Childers says it is an important step to make sure that people who cannot understand the nutritional information on packaging are not forgotten about. |
