Script details: |
Certain foods prepared and sold in the EU may soon have “traffic light” labelling on the packaging.
The idead of introducing a new food labelling system will be voted on by MEPs at the European Parliament today (Thursday June 17th).
If it goes ahead it will mean that foods with a higher than recommended level of fat will have a red colour on the “Fat” information, alerting customers to the danger.
Hence if a product has below the recommended level of sugar this will be coloured Green.
This way of informing customers is already inn place in many countries and a voluntary scheme is also in place in many chain stores in the UK.
Labour MEP Nessa Childers says it is an important step to make sure that people who cannot understand the nutritional information on packaging are not forgotten about. |
