Title: Truck Drivers working hours to be voted on(2 of 3) |
Of interest to: 20 |
Script details: |
Truck drivers who are self employed may soon have to cut down on the number of working hours they put in outside of driving.
The issue as to whether the same rules should apply to both drivers who work for companies and self employed drivers will be voted on at the European Parliament in Strasbourg today.
All drivers already have to obey by the tachograph which clocks the number of hours being driven in a week.
However there is a limit on the number of hours that drivers who are employed by a company can spend at work, outside of being behind the wheel.
Self-employed drivers are exempt from this at the moment.
MEP’s will vote today on whether the rules should apply to drivers right across the board.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin says extra hours put in by drivers on work related issues does not affect road safety. |
